Excavation Tours
This summer Lindum Heritage is spending three weeks in Sudbrooke, Lincolnshire, uncovering Roman remains. Investigations suggest this may be the site of a Roman villa. During the dig tours for the public to see the action and talk to the experts will take place on 21, 28 July and 4 August at 3pm and will last about an hour. During National Archaeology Week (18-22 July) there will be additional activities for children. Booking is essential, call or email: .
Take part in the excavation ...
We have all watched 'Time Team' from the comfort of the sofa, now here's a chance to get off the sofa and find out how it's really done! For one thing we will take our time on this excavation, no dashing about, instead lots of real archaeology. (It's not quite the same as on the telly, but it's just as much fun!)
Our summer dig is open to everyone. Don't worry if you have never held a trowel before, we will provide all you need to know to help you gain the basic skills of archaeological recording and excavation. All training will take place on-site in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
The dig will run for three weeks. You can register for as many or as few days as you wish but if you have little or no experience of excavation we would prefer you to sign up for a minimum of three days (Monday-Wednesday) to participate in the core training sessions.
Structured training sessions, led by professional archaeologists, will take place Monday to Wednesday of each week, Thursday and Friday will provide an opportunity to hone your skills and further your experience.
Monday - The basics of excavation: surveying, recording and digging
Tuesday - Drawing, planning and photography
Wednesday - How to deal with finds and environmental evidence
Thursday - Digging
Friday - More digging!
The cost is £35 per day and includes all tuition, necessary materials and lunch. Full week fee is £150. All places must be booked in advance.
Please note accommodation is not included, but we are happy to help you find local accommodation.
All-inclusive package
During the second week of the dig (25-29 July) an all-inclusive package is also available; this may be especially helpful if you are coming from overseas. The package will include accommodation and also some extras such as meals and visits. Please contact us for further information.
